Chris Weir

Chris is an experienced court and regulatory hearings practitioner and joined our professional regulation team from his position as Acting Director of Regulation at Scotland’s largest regulator, the SSSC where he has also held roles as Head of Fitness to Practise and Head of Legal and Corporate Governance. He has also been a solicitor in private practice. Chris has significant experience in public law focusing on professional regulation and disciplinary proceedings, using a strong legal background and operational management skills.

He was the strategic lead for the SSSC’s regulatory directorate tasked with delivering on its core registration and regulatory functions and key strategic outcomes. He led a large multi-disciplinary department overseeing a fair and human rights compliant fitness to practise process which deals with the investigation and regulatory proceedings of approximately 3000 cases annually. Chris has appeared at many regulatory hearings and in appeals in the sheriff court brought against decisions of the SSSC.

Most of his current practice is weighted in favour of decision making of public authorities and professional practice regulation. He continues to represent clients (individuals and public bodies) at all types of procedural and substantive hearings in various disciplines and forums. He also has a keen interest in technology and enjoys leveraging new and existing tools and applications to drive efficiencies and helping colleagues to focus on areas of the work they enjoy most. When not at work, Chris is a keen badminton player and spends his free time watching football and rugby since his playing days are finished.
