Alun Thomas

Alun is part of our highly-rated employment department and also leads our MARS Mediation and Resolution Service. Having worked extensively in the education sector, he has significant experience of working with HE, FE and secondary education clients as well as a wide range of public sector clients. In addition to representing clients in the Employment Tribunal Alun has been a registered mediator since 2004 and is often asked to assist parties in conflict to reach mediated solutions to the issues they face.

Using the experience gained over 40 years as a solicitor ( during which he has been accredited as a specialist in Employment Law since 1996 ) Alun creates positive and productive relationships with our clients. He is especially aware of the challenges that public sector clients face and their need to manage organisations under intense public scrutiny whilst balancing reputational risk in a context of ever restricted public expenditure. Alun is able to address the issues that confront organisations dealing with change and believes in the importance of engaging and consulting collectively.

Alun is recognised as a leader in the field of employment and education law by the legal directories Chambers & Partners and the Legal 500. He was one of the founding members of the Scottish Discrimination Law Association, and has been an active board member ( and Chair ) of Scottish Mediation for the last 9 years.

When not applying his legal and mediation skills, Alun is active in CSR initiatives. He is chair of the Lothian Homes Trust and on the board of the Bridges Project, an organisation that works with young people who find themselves excluded from mainstream education. He is currently involved in rolling out Peer Mediation training to young people in both primary and secondary education and an Associate Practitioner with the Centre for Good Relations in their work around protests and parades.
